ATMOSYS Air quality modelling workshop in Antwerp

On 20 June 2023 VITO’s ATMOSYS team organised an air quality modelling workshop in the Elisabeth Center in Antwerp. More than 50 professionals active in the air quality sector attended the event and received an overview of the available models in Flanders, their underlying working principles and the required input data.

Participants included urban planners, experts in environmental impact assessments, policy officers and consultants for local or regional authorities.

During the day our ATMOSYS experts outlined how models can be used in a permitting and policy context and highlighted model strengths and limitations. Besides an overview of the standard ATMOSYS modelling toolbox, new innovations (e.g. computational fluid dynamics) and recent developments (e.g. nitrogen deposition) were presented.

The program also offered the floor to a few external organisations: the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) presented their approach and the challenges they encounter when reviewing environmental impact assessments and permit applications, while AG VESPA, the urban development team of the city of Antwerp, offered their vision on managing the complex relation between urban planning and air quality.
