EO Science for Society

Within the Scientific Data Exploitation programme, the European Space Agency responds to the needs of Earth Observation (EO) and Earth System Science communities in terms of new methods, advanced instruments, innovative products and Earth System scientific results.

An important component of this "EO Science for Society" programme is to pioneer innovative and reliable Earth Observation applications and solutions to support international policies on the environment and sustainable development, and to maximise public benefit for a resilient society.

The agriculture sector plays a vital role in global food production and economic development, but it also represents a significant source of atmospheric emissions, contributing to the ongoing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. Hence it is imperative to understand and accurately evaluate emissions from the agricultural sector.  This is challenging however as traditional bottom-up emission inventories for some agricultural sectors often lack reliable activity data and emission factors, leading to large uncertainties.

Within the eo4society programme ESA have launched the Agriculture Atmospheric Emissions (AGATE) project whose aim is to advance knowledge in agriculture emissions through the use of Earth Observation data combined with existing modelling and measurement data.  The requirements for the emission improvements are strongly driven by the involvement of relevant stakeholders.

VITO's ATMOSYS team are working with the department of Satellite Observations of KNMI to deliver the AGATE project. Click below for further information.
