Together with project partners Wood and Umweltbundesamt Austria, VITO supported the European Environment Agency (EEA) in conducting a review of good practices for managing exposure to air and noise pollution.
The work was carried out as part of a framework service contract with the EEA. The full aim of the project was to gather evidence on good practices of managing exposure to air and noise pollution in EU cities and to report on these findings. Seven good practice case studies were reported. Each demonstrating successful measures which were implemented as part of the city’s local air quality plans and programmes under the Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC).
The seven cases were selected following a review of a comprehensive list of air quality plans that have been established by member states across Europe. The cases present best practices in a variety of sectors, namely road transport, industrial emissions, residential solid fuel use and agriculture. VITO contributed with a detailed review of the Flemish air quality plan for the agricultural sector and the anti-smog resolutions targeting residential solid fuel use implemented by the Polish region Malopolska and its capital Krakow.
