In 2018 VITO were one of the lead technical partners tasked with assessing the spatial representativeness (SR) of air quality sampling points in the EU. Based on a comprehensive literature review and stakeholder consultation, a TIER based approach was put forward to assess the SR area of monitoring stations. This TIER-ed approach acknowledges current practices in Europe in the same time identifying best practice methodologies in the higher TIER levels. The study also contributed to a better understanding of the concept of SR by putting forward a simple and transparent recipe for the estimation of the indicator. This recipe is currently begin tested by the FAIRMODE community.
